President Biden Says U.S. Does Not Support Independent Taiwan

Taiwan’s vice president wins presidential election.

Over the weekend, the people of Taiwan voted to give their ruling party a third presidential term, rejecting China’s claims to the region. China has been opposed to president-elect Lai Ching-te, previously the country’s vice president, due to his stance on Taiwan’s independence.

On Sunday, President Joe Biden said, “We do not support independence.”

Secretary of State Antony Blinken congratulated the Taiwanese leader on his victory. He stated the United States “is committed to maintaining cross-strait peace and stability, and the peaceful resolution of differences, free from coercion and pressure.” He said the U.S. looks forward to working with the Taiwanese president and leaders to advance their “longstanding unofficial relationship, consistent with the U.S. one China policy.”

As the Lord Leads, Pray with Us…

  • For the president and his administration officials as they provide support to Taiwan and balance expectations with China.
  • For wisdom for U.S. officials as they engage foreign leaders in regional discussions.
